( . . . )During a silent outbreak of distress between the supernatural and human communities, Busan's dark side is brimming with unrest while those like Jinri lay unaware. With age she has finally conquered some of the city; at twenty two she has become well-acquainted with it. The crescent moon hangs plump in the sky as she dangles her feet over edge of the docks, pale night gown billowing ghost rhythms in the wind. She doesn't see the supernatural radical, bent on procuring justice for his people in the race war and unaware that she can't swim, so when she's pushed into the sea it feels like an unknown act of fate. Jinri will attempt to unlearn the feeling of being swallowed by the sea for years afterwards, of sinking farther into its black throat. A stray vampire is attracted to the sound of her struggling and pulls her onto land, eager to both save her and acquire new recruits. When Jinri she is once again newly birthed; unholy.
If someone were to find the torn piece of fabric from her night gown floating in the water, what would they assume happened? A ghost of a girl, haunting wrecked ships.
(Damned.)
She has nightmares that she is soaking wet, her hair a mass of tendrils, coughing up salt water, holy water, for the longest time.
It takes time to accept her new fate. She wears the punishment of living forever like a chain around her neck, and her loss of faith means that were she to be killed there would be nothing of value for her afterwards. Disillusioned and ill-starred, she first hates her sire, this beautiful demon who took and gave her life at will for the sake of the potential as a member of the undead she sees in her new pupil. Jinri is a rebellious fledgling-one who can take victims skillfully but who too is consumed by her own sin and what was taken from her to listen. Her hunger for blood is almighty, and although she hates herself for it she can't stop the love she has for the warm mouthful of life, nectar of the gods.
Jinri has what she thinks of as divine sight. Perhaps, she thinks, one's ability is a direct reflection of their character: fitting, then, that she has always been so skilled at pretending. At will she becomes transcendent, shedding her own figurative skin to slip into another's, possessing them as a figure from a dream would. If anything, it is good distraction for her to be someone else for awhile. She's careful with the bodies, promising that she will leave them in good condition and leaving as gently as she came. Jinri becomes wise to the ways of her kind and over time, seeing the innate cruelty of others, becomes grateful for the patience of the one who turned her. She attaches to her sire fiercely and desperately. Their blood-lust bonds them, a sisterhood extending into the shadows. Jinri learns control and refinement from her as well as gratitude for blood; she adopts her sire's aptitude for grace, so that hunting becomes an art rather than the primal act she has seen others distort it into. She learns not to kill unless she must, but how to do so if needed. Blood becomes her holy wine, what she worships in the dead of night when nothing else will answer.
On the shores of some empty marsh, she scrawls a secret name for herself with her own long fingertips. 설리. 'Pear blossom in the snow'. Something that will endure even the harshest winter.
The two of them wander through South Korea, where Jinri learns the hidden sides of Seoul— Daegu— Jeonju. She is silent, leaving no traces of herself behind as she has been taught. While loyal to her sire, Jinri has always worked best alone, so she is often left to her own devices due to the fact that trust has been built between them. She spends her time thinking of repentance; outside of cathedrals, unable to go much farther, shivering with the thought of it. Over time, she grows closer to her faith in the only manner she now can. Although there were trips of reconciliation back home in previous years, she visits her family for the first time as this new being-terrified that they will know, that she might hurt them, but the days of wild newborn bloodlust are over and they don't suspect anything- claiming to have been travelling (which is not entirely a lie, she thinks) and some of the old wounds begin to heal. After a couple of years, her sire, sensing Jinri's restlessness, explains that Hong Kong has many resources for those like them. As she has business to attend to in Korea, they promise to meet again, and for the first time since her new birth Jinri is alone.
Several sleeping pills are taken on the plane ride over to ensure that when they cross the water she will be far gone. She awakens to find that Hong Kong is rich with magic, with stories. It takes time to work her way around an entirely new area after having only lived in Korea before. With a desire to save her money and to see the more intimate side of Hong Kong she finds herself drawn to its dark side, becoming attached to the rural and overgrown neighborhoods at once. She rents the apartment above an old apothecary shop for barely anything (and pays for it dearly with the leaky faucets and rusty pipes and the fact that she has to avoid any garlic used in the remedies she purchases), and after striking up a warm relationship with the elderly owner finds that this is so incredibly close to what she had in mind those many years ago. As an apprentice she is able to put her passion for medicine to practical use, and keeps her own secrets locked inside.
ABILITY
"User can possess or take over the body of any living being, whether sentient or not, by stealing their motor functions and senses." (x)
Jinri is able to inhabit another person's body through means of possession. This ability applies only to humans or supernatural beings; she is not able to possess animals. She can possess shapeshifters only when they are not in animal form. Through concentration and focus, she can take over another being's body while still maintaining her own consciousness. In order to possess a body, physical contact must have been made sometime in the past. Touching their body while possessing them is not necessary for her ability to work, but touching them beforehand allows her to create a tie between herself and her target. She must picture the person in her mind, and thinking of what they feel like gives her an anchor to transcend beyond her body into theirs. She could not possess someone in another country or someone that she merely saw in a photograph. She has attempted this before and it has failed (in addition to draining much of her mental and physical energy for a period of time) due to the fact that there are no ties to the person; they are merely a concept. She must have an idea that the person exists; she does not have to be within seeing distance of a person, but it is much less draining for her if they are closer to her. Her range thus far extends one hundred feet or thirty meters. The farther away the person is, the more debilitating the effect on her. It is possible that her range is so limited because her ability is relatively new.
Jinri's type of possession is purely mental. Her 'soul' or spirit doesn't leave her body in a black cloud; it is an entirely invisible process that has nothing to do with something tangible exiting or entering a form. It is her consciousness that leaves and arrives at will. Therefore, she does not have access to the victim's own experiences or knowledge and is left to her own devices as far as figuring them out. When she is inside of another body, her consciousness is transferred to their body, leaving her own body 'empty' in that her consciousness is not inside of it. She would appear as if she were passed out and cannot be woken from this 'sleep' by being shaken, talked to, or any other means. She takes great pains to ensure that her body is not found, most often locking herself away in her apartment beforehand. Neither her body and mind nor the possessed person's is harmed in this process. The possessed would have no memory that she was using their body and would instead wake up with a sensation similar to if they had blacked out.
Jinri cannot possess multiple bodies at a time. She cannot lay dormant in a body while said person goes about their life; when she is inside them it is her mind that is controlling them. None of her abilities such as enhanced strength or immortality cross over when she is possessing someone, so that if they were a human she would only have human capabilities, etc. She can only possess someone for a limited amount of time; the longer she does so, the less energy she has. Her max limit is three hours; feeling incredibly mentally drained and fearing that she might be stuck inside of them forever or may cause permanent harm to herself, perhaps even death, she has never attempted to go past this point. Feeding is a necessity after leaving the possessed's body, and since she is too tired to hunt she keeps stored blood around her house for these purposes. Her ability would not work unless she was properly fed beforehand (e.g. a 'full' meal) since she would have nothing to sustain her, and if she were to attempt this she would face serious mental and physical repercussions and would likely not regain consciousness.
After using her ability, even for a short period of time, she is at her most vulnerable, having such physical symptoms as feeling extremely tired, weak, and in need of sleep. She would need to feed immediately in order to restore her physical energy. However, feeding would not restore the mental effects that take toll on her. Being conscious in someone else's body always feels unnatural and afterwards she feels out of place and disjointed, having to regain the feeling of being in her own skin again. She has a tendency to develop some of the physical tics that she picks up on from them, so if she had been possessing a tall, large man beforehand she would feel unnaturally light in her own body, and mimic some of the ways she behaved in his. Some bodies are more energetic and others rough; Jinri claims that all bodies give off certain vibes, and although this has no factual backing she often associates bodies by how they make her feel. As she has no access to their inner thoughts, this is purely speculation. In some bodies she might therefore have more nervous hand movements, move more gracefully, or speak more quietly, which can carry into her own habits also. After using her ability for several hours these symptoms are exacerbated by a very high amount; she would need to sleep for at least a day and feed a lot afterwards to restore her energy, and she would feel strange and disconnected for at least a week. The picking up of others' habits and mimicking them does not always go fully away, however, as she has adopted some of them as her own and cannot always tell what was originally hers or not. If someone were aware that she had this ability and were mentally strong enough to protect their minds, they could force Jinri out of their consciousness and leave her extremely weak; much of her ability relies on the power of surprise and is one of the reasons why she rarely possesses the same person twice, not wanting to arouse suspicion as well as finding it more interesting to have a wide variety to choose from. She generally makes sure to possess those who she has no real life ties to and has never be seen with unless it were with a stranger that she had a drink with and got them to spill some of their secrets, some of which might have made her curious enough to try them out; none of her friends, peers, or acquaintances would be exposed to the process.
PERSONALITY
Jinri has a natural duality, which can be easily misconstrued depending on one's perspective. As a child she often battled with the misconceptions that were placed upon her, seen as a creature of fancy who carried little weight. This can be partially attributed to the delicacy of her demeanor and her penchant for beauty. Indeed, her glasses are rose colored, her fondness of poetic tendencies lending her to be seen as sensitive; and that would not be a false claim. She is moved easily, her full heart procured in her love for many things.
This does not necessarily mark weakness, however. There are hidden depths to her that howl-even as a girl she struggled with this imbalance. Being sired certainly un-caged a side of herself that existed previously, but allowed to run rampant distorted her own sense of morals. As a girl she had a fascination with the inner workings of the body and was never squeamish towards blood or bone, which was only heightened when she was sired and twisted into a kind of craving. She dislikes the idea of being cruel to humans, finding it immoral in addition to lacking taste. However, she has her own distorted set of principles. Her interest in enticing her victims into her clutches, in playing upon the fancies of their delights so that both parties take pleasure in her hunt is somewhat of a thrilling game to her. Jinri also uses her ability to do as she pleases, living other's lives to the fullest and welcoming herself to masquerade as them. She often plays upon the fact that she is underestimated to her own advantage: no one would suspect that such a soft girl would be capable of such things. She can be incredibly manipulative in this sense, often charming her way into getting what she wants.
Possessing a curious spirit, she is frequently taken by what she does not yet know that can be learned. This characteristic leads her to many discoveries, whether in intellectual terms or in new areas of Hong Kong. Having a strong desire to be mentally stimulated, she enjoys wit-filled conversations that keep her on her toes. She has a tendency to get bored easily and finds excitement in trying new things, which can be seen in her hunting method as much as it can be in her 'ordinary' existence. However, she is truly introverted at heart and needs to have an immense amount of personal time to recharge, whether that is through late night quiet walks or long bouts of self pampering. When not out in the city or feeding she is often in her apartment having down time.
Her nature is to be affectionate depending on the person in question; for those that she is close to, she harbors intense fondness and will display this openly. In keeping with her tendency to charm her way into what she wants, Jinri enjoys being spoiled and if she is enabled to do so, she will certainly thrive off of it. Still, she prides herself on being independent after many years of obtaining such a skill and so would never put herself in a position to where she would have to be looked after constantly. She can be quite stubborn in this respect. Indeed, having a hard head runs deep into her core, so much so that she refused to follow her parent's wishes and attend a university. For all of her pride, she still cares deeply, and using the excuse that she is traveling for reasons why she can't visit as often as she likes, attempts to make up for it by sending them letters and calls. Despite her affections, she is extremely private and keeps many aspects of herself hidden from others, preferring to remain somewhat of a mystery. There are also certain aspects of herself that have been influenced by her ability; the physical habits that she has adopted while possessing others sometimes become incorporated into her own habits, making her unsure exactly which is her own original and which have been mimicked; this further attributes to the mask that she often adopts around others and makes it more difficult to distinguish where her reality exists, even for herself.
MISCELLANIA
- Very much enjoys perusing antique shops looking for anything of interest, particularly if it's out of the ordinary. Has a habit of collecting items which are claimed to have unusual properties.
- Works at Xin Yi (辛夷, eg. Magnolia Flower), a traditional apothecary shop named after the plant commonly used in ancient medicinal practices.
- Lives in the small space above the apothecary shop which is quite cramped and old. Due to her aversion to sunlight she can't keep as many plants as she'd like, but at night she does tend to the flora in the shop below. The windows are covered by curtains at all times. The dim lighting, sometimes from candle-light, is even more prevalent in her bedroom. Everything retains an old world quality and has been given a second life, from the bathroom with its chipped claw foot tub to the faded book case in the living area. Crystals, antiques, trinkets, dusty books in various languages, and charms can be found throughout the space, intensifying the cramped sensation. Herbs, roots, and traditional medicine are kept in her kitchen for the purpose of her practice. Rarely, if ever, will she invite anyone over. In addition, as a vampire she must be invited into others' living spaces.
- Never went to university. Claims this quality 'builds a certain amount of character' and enjoys putting her prowess for medicine (blood and gore has never upset her) to more unconventional uses. She does have a desire to attend one day.
- Was Catholic growing up with a very strong spiritual side rather than religious affiliation. After being sired, she fell from faith and struggled for years with her loss. While traveling with her sire, she visited the outside of cathedrals at a distance and over the years began to regain a sliver of her old faith, one which evolved in a rather malformed manner. She now keeps certain paintings depicting holy scenes in her apartment and other items which haven't been blessed, feeling that it is a part of her no matter how tattered and despite the innate guilt she feels from her current lifestyle.
- Enjoys feeding for reasons in addition to the physical sensations; sees it as a sort of blood tie between herself and her victim. Therefore, she prefers to charm and entice her target in an almost ceremonial fashion. She is incredibly careful about who she sets her sights on and how she goes about it, aiming to be as discreet as possible. As she was sired a comparatively short time ago her own blood, if it were ever tasted, would have a very bitter flavor.
- Due to the events in her past and despite her previous affinity for water, large bodies of water unnerve her. Uses a bicycle for transport.
- Hair is its natural COLOR, kept long with very slight waves. Her style is generally reflective of her appetite for aesthetic values and vintage undertones; soft hues of crème and rose pink in velvet, and lace; sun dresses, over-sized sweaters, denim jumpers, and over-priced lingerie (purely for her own eyes; online shopping is somewhat of an addiction and can be seen in her massive wardrobe).
- Korean is her native tongue. Despite the lessons instilled in her as a child, has forgotten most of her French. Can understand, read, and converse in Cantonese after living in Hong Kong for three years. Has been learning some basic conversational Mandarin from the woman who runs the apothecary shop.
